Bawdsey Manor - the home of RADAR - and The Transmitter Block

Listen to the living voice of history!

Bawdsey Radar Group logoIn July 2003 a committee, now called Bawdsey Radar Group (BRG), was formed at a public meeting at Bawdsey Manor to take on the challenge of the restoration and development of the Transmitter Block, which was included in "Restoration," the BBC television series that featured Britain's endangered historic buildings.

BRG's aim is to restore the Transmitter Block at Bawdsey, Suffolk, to create a unique exhibition, educational facility and visitor attraction. High-tech displays will explain how radar was invented, the central role that Bawdsey played in this and how both saved Britain during the Battle of Britain.

The ultimate dream is to raise one of the radar transmitter towers that defended the country in the Second World War.

Until then, the story of Bawdsey Manor, from "death rays" to "Bloodhounds" is being re-created by the Bawdsey Radar Group. The transmitter Block itself may not be the most attractive of historic buildings but it is certainly one of the most important pieces of the jigsaw of technologies that supported allied victory in WW2.

The BRG website carries the latest news, and information about volunteering, what's on, a photo gallery, projects under way, an excellent oral history collection that you can listen to on the web, links and resources, how to get to the Transmitter Block and, last but not least, planned opening times.

Please check the BRG website for the latest news and udates, and do please contact the group through their website www.bawdseyradargroup.co.uk before travelling, to confirm times and admission fees.
